Project overview

Raglan Food Co’s sustainability credentials and leadership made them a natural partner for the Planetary Facts Pilot. Three of Raglan’s top selling coconut yoghurts (Vanilla, Greek, Blueberry) were assessed, and Raglan were the first organisation to release their Planetary Facts results to the market.

APPROACH
PAN worked with our partners thinkstep-anz (who specialise in product life cycle assessments) and Planetary Insights (who provide digital Planetary Accounting tools) to convert data from Raglan such as the source and quantity of their ingredients and packaging, and the energy and water use in their processing plant, to quantify Planetary Facts for Raglan’s coconut yoghurts. The results were delivered as graphics for Raglan to use in communications with their stakeholders, and as a detailed report with impacts broken down by process and indicator, to give Raglan a deep understanding of the environmental hotspots throughout the products’ life cycles.
oUTCOMES

The assessments have helped Raglan understand what ‘good’ looks like by setting the results in context of a recommended daily budget (per capita) of environmental impacts to stay within the planet’s limits.

Results highlight the different performance of the three yoghurts and confirm that a serving of any of the yoghurts is well within a daily recommended limit across all ten Planetary metrics, with plenty of budget to spare for other food and activities. Raglan also now has the critical data and insights they need to address environmental hotspots, enabling them to continue their outstanding efforts in reducing their environmental impact and enhancing product development.
